UPDATE: It is with great sadness that I make this update. On May 23rd, 2016 Fab lost his battle with cancer. As I stated in my original caption for this story, I had only a few brief hours with Fab, but in that short period of time I quickly came to recognize that I had met a very special individual. You could see it, feel it, as he walked around the hospital, that everyone that he came in contact with treated as if they were family, even complete strangers like myself. His attitude was amazing, his character strong and gentle. He never once was negative about his situation, he uplifted and inspired others to not give up. He took everyday as a true blessing and lived everyday as if it would be his last. Fab was and still is a truly inspirational human being.
My deepest sympathy, thoughts, and prayers go out to Fab's friends and family during this difficult time.
A few weeks ago I got to spend some time with Fabrizio Pirrone as he went for his chemo treatment at UPMC Shadyside and the Hillman Cancer Center. The photos were part of a cancer story that ran in the Pittsburgh Business Times.
Even though I only got to spend a few hours with Fab, he made me feel as if I had known him for years. An unbelievably down to earth guy. I am very proud of the work I did for this story.
Most of all, I feel truly fortunate and honored to have met someone of such character and inspiration.
This is a man who is not letting his cancer beat him.
